Please note; Starter kits no longer contain a plastic whetstone sheath as they are out of stock. Prices have been reduced accordingly.
These starter kits feature the peening jig as the peening tool. It comes with the Ash-wood snath (handle), a scythe blade, a whetstone, a plastic whetstone sheath, and the peening jig. Everything you need to get you mowing, sharpening and maintaining a fine edge on the blade.
When the scythe blade edge becomes too thick from hours of sharpening the blade will need to be peened. Peening is "cold" forging.
The peening jig is the ideal tool for those who are not so experienced at peening and want a simple tool for doing the job. All that is required is to place the blade flat on the surface of the anvil with the edge against the post. Place the appropriate cap on as per instructions, and tap with the hammer as the blade is passed through. A special hammer is not required for the peening jig as the hammer is not directly contacting the blade. A normal building hammer will suffice.
If you think you can master the skills of "free-hand" peening and want the freedom to manipulate bevel size and mend damage you may prefer the Picard Anvil and Hammer starter kit.
